Why is ketamine infusion therapy used for chronic pain? Ketamine is a non-opiate medication that blocks a receptor called NMDA. That receptor is responsible for many chronic pain conditions. Repeated block can result in sustained relief. Low-dose ketamine produces a rapid response and relief of symptoms. Repeat infusions result in down regulation of the NMDA receptor helping restore normal nerve function. Sustained benefit is often achieved.

Ketamine infusions are provided in a comfortable, controlled environment. All patients are monitored closely and infusion optimized for individual patients. Risk is very low though some patients do have side effects including dysphoria but these effects are self limiting. A series of low-dose ketamine infusions can dramatically alter or even eliminate chronic pain.

Ketamine should be considered only if you have the time to complete a customized protocol that may require a number of visits.
